Two more whales caught in Bequia yesterday

Two more whales were caught off the Grenadine island of Bequia yesterday, following the capture of a 35-foot bull on March 8.{{more}}

The capture of the whales yesterday came as a delegation from the whaling community of Bequia was due back today, from a whale watching expedition in the Dominican Republic.

The whale killed on March 8 was caught 500 yards off Spring in Bequia.

The five persons who visited the Dominican Republic were able to get a first-hand glimpse of whales in their natural habitat, compliments the National Trust.

Gaston Bess, a member of the delegation, was once a member of a whaling team that landed about eight whales.

Javan Stowe’s father is still an active whaler today and Richard Ollivierre and Alicia Lavia both have close relatives who are still involved in the whaling industry today.

The National Trust has been trying to promote whale watching as an alternative on the island of Bequia, which has a long tradition of whale hunting.

The purpose of the visit to the Dominican Republic was to expose the participants to a first-hand experience of whale watching.(DD)
