The Caribbean Media Corporation had reported on Sunday that at least five Caribbean students were dead, but St Vincent and the Grenadines Ambassador to Cuba Dexter Rose told SEARCHLIGHT yesterday that one person, a Cuban, was the only fatality.
Rose said the information reaching the CARICOM heads of mission is that a bus travelling to a Grenada Independence celebration in the province of Camaguey overturned on a highway.
âStudents from Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, the Bahamas and Mozambique were treated for minor injuries and discharged. A replacement bus was dispatched from Havana and brought those who wished to, back to the city. Other students continued the journey onto the province of Camaguey, where the celebrations were held,â Rose said.
The Ambassador told SEARCHLIGHT that the two Vincentians who were among the Caribbean students on their way to the Camaguey celebrations reported to the Embassy following the incident that they were okay.
There are several dozen Vincentian students pursuing university level education in Cuba.
