NICE radiothon rakes in $21,000

Over $21,000 was deposited into the “Save Nice Radio Appeal” account last Friday, following a radiothon on Nice Radio on Thursday, February 14.{{more}}

The second of its kind to be held, the radiothon was put on to pay interest and costs in the matter where BDS Ltd was ordered to pay a judgement debt to Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves of $138,000, stemming from a judgement in 2008.

At a press conference last Wednesday, attorney Kay Bacchus-Browne, one of the persons spearheading the appeal, said that they had raised over $140,000, enough to pay the judgement debt, but a further $70,000 was needed to pay interest and costs.

In an interview on Monday, Bacchus-Browne said it was “amazing” that the radiothon was able to raise over $21,000 in one day, to go towards paying interest and costs in the matter.

“This morning when I called the bank, the account stood at over $161,000. With this $161,000, all of the Prime Minister’s fees, interest will be covered,” Bacchus-Browne said.

She noted that on the night of the call-in programme, pledges received amounted to $27,000, but $21,000 was deposited on Friday, February 15.

Bacchus-Browne said she is not certain if another radiothon will be held, but noted that they may have another one when she returns to the state.

The first appeal was held in October 2012.

The judgement stemmed from a defamation suit that was awarded to Gonsalves after talk show host Elwardo Lynch made comments about the financing of a trip to Rome for the family of the Prime Minister.(KW)
