The base, which is a joint security venture between the governments of the United States of America and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, will include an operations centre, a waterfront pier,

a fuel storage and dispensing system and a communications tower, the U.S. Embassy, Bridgetown told SEARCHLIGHT.

The Embassy said the construction project is funded by the U.S. Department of Defense’s Building Partner Capacity Program and is contracted to Palgag Building Technologies. The ground-breaking for the project was in September 2012, and it is expected to be completed in August 2013.

“Canouan’s key location between St Vincent and Grenada will strengthen the Coastguard’s maritime law enforcement and search and rescue capabilities in this remote area,” the Embassy said.

An estimated 75 per cent of the contractor’s work force are from St Vincent and the Grenadines.
