Weekes turns around misfortune

Out of something bad, good has come. That is the mindset that Kevin Weekes says he adopted shortly after losing the family business to a fire on April 1, 2012.{{more}}

The entire top floor of the building located on Bay Street was destroyed by a fire that left a family business in ruins.

But all hope was not lost and Weekes said that he was determined to keep the name of his father’s business alive; after all, it is almost a legacy in Kingstown.

The property has a lot of history, going through a number of looks and housing a variety of businesses.

Starting from a disco and bar, to a guest house, supermarket and wholesale outlet; some would, however, say that the property became best known as a distributor for the brewery.

For close to 40 years, the property served the public in a number of ways.

Then came the devastating fire, which destroyed close to four decades of memories and hard work.

But through the strength he said he got from God and his fiancée, Ava John, complemented by a good architect and an ideal contractor, things started looking up and a new era was about to be ushered in.

“People would most often remember the fire, but then we brought it back with something entirely different,” Weekes said.

But Weekes says that he is about to turn over a new leaf in the long tradition of that Bay Street property.

“It is something that puts a lift not just to the area, but to Kingstown,” he continued.

The new building continues to be home to Choice Meats on the ground floor, but Weekes said that he has transformed the first floor into an ideal spot for small offices.

And the public is being invited to come see for themselves the transformation that has taken place.

Weekes said that he will be hosting an open house on Wednesday, February 20, beginning at 9 in the morning and running until 6 in the evening.

“Persons will have the opportunity to come in and have a first-hand look at the facility and see whether it is suitable for what they want,” he said.
