Members of the CBA and representatives of the Carnival fraternity attended mass at the St Georges Cathedral in Kingstown, the first in a series of events marking the introduction of Band of the Year title in 1963, CBA chair, Hugh Raguette, said in a release.

The sermon was delivered by the Right Rev. C. Leopold Friday, bishop of the Windward Islands.

Dean of St Georges’ Cathedral The Very Rev. Patrick E. McIntosh consented to hosting the CBA at the mass.

In 1963, the St Vincent Jaycees, then organisers of the annual Carnival, agreed to the request of the masquerade bands to declare an overall Costume Band of the Year Winner.

The first band to win the title was the Bridge Boys, led that year by Roy Austin with the presentation “A Portrait of Ancient Egypt”.
