SVG’s fruits, vegetables planted in primary, secondary teaching aid

Local primary and secondary schools are now equipped with a new teaching aid: posters of the fruits, vegetables, root crops and herbs of St Vincent and the Grenadines.{{more}}

The posters, which display 55 vegetables, herbs and root crops and 56 fruits grown locally, was a project initiated by Nasser Khan, with the support of First Citizens Investment Services (FCIS).

Khan, a Trinidadian author, sports analyst, and carnival enthusiast, said he was motivated to create his initial posters, which highlighted the fruits and vegetables of his native homeland.

With the assistance of FCIS, he was able to produce similar posters for Barbados, St Lucia, and now St Vincent and the Grenadines.

A symbolic handover of the posters was made to Minister of Education and Deputy Prime Minister, Girlyn Miguel, Friday at the FCIS office in Kingstown.

Miguel, who thanked Khan and FCIS for the initiative, like Khan, used the opportunity to encourage the students to consume more fruits and vegetables, as opposed to processed foods.

She then handed over posters to students of the St Mary’s Roman Catholic, Kingstown Preparatory, Kingstown Anglican and CW Prescod Primary Schools, who were at the event. (JJ)
