GHS offers financial assistance to student with kidney trouble

June Williams-Thomas says that she is extremely grateful to the students and staff of the Girls’ High School for their kindness.{{more}}

She was responding to the donation of $10,522, money that was raised by the students of the school to assist Thomas’ 12-year-old daughter Lejun with her dialysis treatment.

Thomas said that her daughter was diagnosed with kidney failure in June this year and she now requires dialysis treatment three times a week.

According to Thomas, each of these three-hour sessions costs $500.

“It’s real burdensome,” Thomas said, adding that apart from the assistance of some friends, the bill has to be paid by her and her husband.

“The contribution has been a great help … I’m very grateful,” Thomas said.

“It is going to make a lot of difference for us and for Lejun,” she continued.

She said that she was so overwhelmed by the gesture that she was brought to tears.

Thomas thanked the students of the GHS and said that she is especially thankful to the school’s Headmistress Andrea Bowman, who she said has been offering assistance.

The woman said that the family are now looking for a long-term solution and should a suitable kidney donor be found, Lejun will be going to Trinidad for surgery. (DD)
