92 students benefit from entrepreneurship workshop this month

Students attending the technical institutions in St Vincent and the Grenadines received training in entrepreneurship from two capacity-building workshops this month.{{more}}

Participants included 60 students from the Georgetown Technical Institute and 32 students from the Kingstown, Campden Park, and Barrouallie Technical Institutes.

The workshop facilitator was Curtis Dennie, research and information development manager of Invest SVG.

Invest SVG is the government agency that is responsible for attracting foreign direct investment and provides business support services to local business community.

The purpose of the workshops was to improve the students’ knowledge on entrepreneurship and to foster a culture of entrepreneurial thinking in facilitating creativity and innovation.

The students were introduced to the principles of entrepreneurship, which highlighted the processes for starting a business and the entrepreneurial characteristics that drive successful business ventures. The students were also exposed to business planning, marketing concepts, and the various types of entrepreneur.

Dennie advised the students to be creative in their business ideas, transfer their skills into a business enterprise, and endeavour to be creators of employment. The sessions were held at the conference room of the Curriculum Development Unit and at the Georgetown Technical Institute respectively.

The Ministry of Education, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) and Invest SVG collaborated in these workshops. The workshops were part of the activities that are organized by the ECCB and its partners in recognition of the month of October as Financial Information Month. The theme for the month is “Challenge yourself. Innovate-Compete-Succeed! The main focus of the month’s activities is on entrepreneurship. The students of the Technical Institutes will participate in an Entrepreneurship Innovation Contest. Winners in the contest will receive cash prizes towards implementation of their business innovation.

Other activities planned for Financial Information Month include a Walkathon on Saturday, November 3, at the Calliaqua playing field from 5:30 a.m.
