Christopher Taylorâs âThe Black Carib Wars: Freedom, Survival and the Making of the Garifunaâ was published worldwide in August.
David âDarkieâ Williams, president of the TGHF, said at a press conference last Tuesday that although Taylorâs research took him to other countries with Garifuna settlements, a substantial amount was done in St Vincent.
He said the book deals primarily with the Carib Wars in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) between the 1760s and the 1790s.
The launch is scheduled for October 25, the first day of the independence seminar.
The two-day independence seminar is slated for October 25 and 26 at the Peace Memorial Hall, under the theme âGarifuna: Land, Reparation and Social Justiceâ.
At the press conference last week, Cerlian Russell, vice president of TGHF, said the seminar aims to address reparation for any injustice on the indigenous Kalinago and Garifuna people with respect to their land in SVG.
The seminar will also provide further information to the public, pertaining to the history of land ownership between the Europeans and the indigenous people, Russell said.
Russell further said the seminar hoped to follow up on work that began at the International Garifuna Conference that was held in St Vincent in March. (BK)
