Inspector of Police Grenville Dick to retire

Inspector of Police Grenville Dick is now in the twilight stages of his career as a law enforcement officer, after proceeding on pre-retirement leave, having served the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) for 33 years.{{more}}

Dick, head of the RSVGPF Garage, began his pre-retirement leave on Friday. A family oriented man, Dick said he is happily married to Thelma Dick and is the father of Alicia Dick-Brezel, Dezron and Zoreik Dick.

The Riley resident, who served the RSVGPF with distinction, recounting the years of his tenure said: “It was challenging. It had its ups and downs, but it was something I love. I enjoyed dealing with vehicles and I did it with a passion.”

Dick said one of the feats of his career is that he had never been charged with a disciplinary offence while serving the organization, “because I always tried to do my job to the best of my ability”.

On January 2, 1979, Dick was enlisted as a member of the RSVGPF. Shortly after his recruitment, he was sent to the Beat and Patrol, as well as to the Traffic Departments for brief periods.

The same year he joined the organization, he was transferred to the Garage, where he worked his way up to the position of Head of the Department by 1990, until his pre-retirement leave.

During his tenure, Dick accumulated a wealth of knowledge in mechanics, as well as management. His practical experience was bolstered by his theoretical training at Aberdeen Proving Ground, a United States Army facility located in Aberdeen, Maryland, USA, along with several management courses and workshops.

His advice to young police officers or to persons interested in joining the RSVGPF is to be focused, disciplined, trustworthy, and “possess good public relations skills”.

Looking back, Dick said: “I have no regrets. The experience has been like that of a cricketer. As a batsman you would know when you are missing the balls and you are not seeing the balls well, it is time to retire. You have to know when to go.”

Giving insight as to how he would be spending his retirement, Dick said he intends to relax, but will continue to ply his trade as a mechanic, as well as a farmer.

“I want to wish the staff at the Garage and the other members of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force all the best. I also hope the Garage will grow from strength to strength,” said Dick.

The RSVGPF Garage has the role of conducting vehicle inspection and mechanic work, which includes the maintenance of police vehicles.(Police Pubic Relations)
