No reports of damage, flooding after weekend rains – NEMO

There were no reports of damage following three weather systems that affected the country on the weekend, resulting in torrential rains and thunderstorms.{{more}}

Yesterday in Kingstown, the weather improved from mid-morning, but it began raining again in the early evening.

The local meteorological office said the weather should turn sunny and warm again by tomorrow.

Director of the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) Howie Prince said the country was affected by three weather systems: a trough, a tropical wave and the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which brought heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

“A trough, tropical wave and the ITCZ met in our general area, producing the kind of weather system that we saw over the weekend,” Prince said.

He said that the local authorities had previous knowledge of the tropical wave, but NEMO did not get an advisory of the amount of rain that was expected.

“Notwithstanding that, we had a weekend of very heavy rainfall and I am happy to report up to midnight (Sunday) we had not gotten any reports of damage or flooding or any significant landslide,” Prince said.

He said that NEMO had also checked with various police stations across the country and they too had no reports of damage.

There were some calls about rising river levels in Georgetown, but nothing significant, Prince said.

Lightning was blamed for some reports of damage to appliances, Prince said.

Prince, however, called on persons who may have experienced or know of any damage to contact NEMO to report them (DD).
