LIME pays out $785,000 in scholarships over last 31years

For over 31 years, LIME has adapted this scholarship programme as a result of negotiations between the Commercial Technical and Allied Workers Union (CTAWU), which represents the workers, and LIME.

The agreement has seen 86 students receiving full scholarships and dozens more needy students receiving bursaries on a one-off basis.

The annual scholarships are awarded to qualifying children of staff members who return top grades in the Common Entrance Examinations and also to needy students. The needy students are determined by a local LIME committee, which gives careful consideration to economically challenged parents from various communities.

Each awardee receives $1,400 to attend Forms 1 to 3 and $1,600 from Form 4 to A-Level.

What started out as an award for one student, has expanded to four students each year, with an accumulative amount of over $785,000, money LIME considers a well spent investment in our country’s youth and education, a release from LIME said.

LIME provides four scholarships on an annual basis and invests up to $42,000 annually on 28 students within the local school system .

Ahmar Delpesche is the son of Shaka Delpesche, a technician specialist in the Service Support Department and Webster Roban was awarded the scholarship based on need and his excellent performance at Common Entrance. Webster is the son of Byera resident Marisabell Roban.

Zariea DeSouza, Afreeca Graham and Zawadie-Tu Graham all received $300 bursaries to assist with school expenses as well.

Head of Human Resource Sandra Matthews said, “We have had many excellent performers over the years and just to mention Charlene Douglas, daughter of Kenneth Douglas, was an Island Scholar and Fidel Neverson, son of Richard and Marcelle Neverson, is now a Planning Engineer with VINLEC. Students are not only expected to be intelligent, but also to be disciplined. Students are asked to provide a certificate of good conduct and their Exam Index number during the life of the scholarship. Whereas LIME provides the financing, we expect the students to maintain regular attendance, grades and excel academically.”
