Ex-deputy police chief Bobb laid to rest

Former Deputy Commissioner of Police and Deputy Governor General, Denniston Bobb was laid to rest on August 23, following an official funeral at the Kingstown Methodist Church.{{more}}

Bobb died on August 15 at the age of 81.

He joined the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force on June 19, 1950 and would go on to serve for 35 years retiring on October 18, 1985.

He moved through the ranks of the Police Force first being appointed Corporal in 1959; Sergeant in November 1969; Station Sergeant in 1964; Inspector in 1968; and Assistant Superintendent in 1969.

Bobb was appointed Assistant Commissioner in April 1973 and became Deputy Commissioner in 1984 and, for a brief period, acted as the nation’s top cop between September and October 1984.

During his time in the police force, he served in a number of departments, including immigration, special branch and traffic.

He also attended and excelled in a number of local, regional and international training courses.

Bobb was described by others as a strict disciplinarian and an avid sportsman.

Following his successful career in the police force, he did the members of the local constabulary proud in his retirement years, having been appointed as Deputy Governor General.

Prior to the state funeral, Bobb’s body lay in state at the House of Assembly, where it was viewed by the Governor General’s Deputy Dame Monica Dacon, Speaker of the House of Assembly Hendrick Alexander, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, Leader of the Opposition Arnhim Eustace, members and former members of Parliament and members of the public.

The viewing was followed by a procession to the Methodist Church.

Among those paying tribute to Bobb at his funeral service was son Don Bobb, former Prime Minister Sir James Mitchell and former Commissioner Randolph Toussaint.
