Medical students receive white coats

Another batch of medical students officially received their white coats at a robing ceremony to mark the occasion on Monday, at the Peace Memorial Hall.{{more}}

Fifty-seven students were introduced to the medical profession – witnessed by a full house of family, friends and well-wishers.

Keynote speaker Dr James M. Lawrence MD, who has now joined the Trinity School of Medicine from his post as professor of medicine at the University of South Alabama, recalled his days at medical school.

Lawrence shared words of wisdom and advice with the class of 2016, encouraging them to retain the sympathy and tolerance for their patients that they will undoubtedly start out with.

“Be humanistic!” he urged. “We need to keep the spirit.”

Lawrence acknowledged that some students might lose their enthusiasm for the vocation and their patients by the time they get into the third year of their studies; but that they should endeavour to keep a positive attitude, despite the rigours and challenges they may face.

“We are here to help … any time, anywhere,” he enthused.

Dr Douglas Skelton, vice chancellor and dean of the institution, echoed that sentiment.

“All of us are here to make doctors … out of every one of you,” he insisted.

In welcome remarks, Steve Wilson, chancellor of the Trinity School of Medicine, said that of the 57 students who were accepted into the institution this semester, 15 per cent are local students.

He explained that this was the largest attendance of Vincentian students in the history of the institution.

Chief Medical Officer Dr St Clair Thomas and Governor General Sir Frederick Ballantyne also gave brief remarks.

Ten students were also introduced to the pre-medical programme.

The last white coat ceremony was held on May 7, 2012.(JV)
