Grammar School student awarded the first Vibert Williams Memorial Scholarship

A former student of the Richland Park Government School is the first recipient of the Vibert Williams Memorial Scholarship. Jayorn Richards, a first form student of the St Vincent Grammar School, is the recipient. He will receive annually $1,500 for five years.{{more}}

Jayorn was best qualified among other students from the Richland Park Government School. He performed the best at this year’s Common Entrance with an average of 83.82%. He is from a banana farming family, which was among the main criteria for selection.

At a ceremony to present Jayorn with his scholarship, brief remarks were made by Principal of the Richland Park Government School Carol Miller, who stressed the importance of doing well. She also expressed gratitude to the sponsors of the scholarship. Remarks were also made by Woodrow Williams, brother of Vibert Williams. He lamented how closely attached his brother was to the farming community of Richland Park.

Vibert Williams was a former employee at the St Vincent Banana Growers’ Association. He worked as Operations Manager for many years, after which he was appointed Assistant Manager. He died on January 1, 2011.

The idea of the Vibert Williams Memorial Scholarship was initiated by Francis “Biggs” Williams, Vibert’s cousin.
