Last Sunday, as the world celebrated “International Youth Day”, the St Vincent and the Grenadines Red Cross Society (SVGRCS) hosted the first ever youth summit as its contribution to youth work in this country.{{more}}

The summit was held at the National Insurance Services conference room and saw several youth groups in attendance. There were representatives from the Cadets, Scouts, 4H, Pathfinders, and various Red Cross youth groups from the schools and community.

Despite inclement weather, volunteers from as far Fancy made the effort to participate in the historic activity, as they sought to foster a closer bond among youth groups.

The one-day activity was divided into two main sessions. The morning session began with opening remarks by Leroy Jack, one of the main coordinators of the event. Following the opening remarks, Minister of Youth Frederick Stephenson gave brief remarks. Also welcoming the young delegates was Director General of the SVGRCS Bernard T. Marksman. Chair of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Youth Commission Ashanta Osborne-Moses was unable to attend due to travelling issues, but her presence was felt, as her message was read to the gathering by the youth coordinator of the SVGRCS, Leroy Jack.

The presentations that followed were “Good Governance and Democracy” delivered by Dr Adrian Fraser, “Climate Change and the Environment” by Dr Reynold Murray, “Globalization, Trade and Investment” by Luke Browne, “Employment and Decent work” by Deputy Labour Commissioner Bernadine Dublin.

The programme climaxed with an award ceremony, during which the Red Cross volunteers were recognised for their contribution to the organisation. Some individuals were awarded with medals for giving service for more than 10 years, while groups were given awards for the largest group and most active group.

Approximately 60 persons were in attendance, with over 50 attendees being youths.
