Students benefit from Invest SVG internships

Twelve fourth and fifth form students from across the nation have completed one-month internships at eight businesses, organised by Invest SVG, the nation’s investment promotions agency.{{more}}

The students were attached to Invest SVG, Erica’s Country Style, Mountain Top Springs Ltd, IKTV, General Employees Co-operative Credit Union, National Insurance Services, SVG Broadcasting Corporation, and the International Financial Services Authority.

Communications Officer of Invest SVG B. Tedra Kirb, said in a release that the programme was “a huge success” and she is pleased with the quality of students.

Invest SVG has expanded its Secondary Schools Summer Internship Programme (SSSIP) from four students in 2011, the first year of the programme.

The agency quoted representatives from the partnering businesses as saying that the interns performed exceptionally well in the quality of work produced and their conduct.

“Three students created such a lasting impression that they were asked to continue working even after the internship ended on Friday, with one of the three being offered in whole, part-time employment,” Invest SVG said.

The students are Finton Garraway, a recent graduate of the St Martin’s Secondary School who interned at IKTV; Clairessa Jacobs of the Intermediate High School, who interned at Erica’s Country Style; and John Rickards, recent graduate of the St Vincent Grammar School, who interned at Hitz FM 103.7 & 91.5.

At the closing ceremony, Deputy Executive Director of Invest SVG Allan Alexander implored businesses in the Grenadines to partner in next year’s programme.

He said this would allow for more students in the Grenadines to access the programme.

One student, Zeeshan Blugh of the Bequia Community High School, participated this year, and was attached to Mountain Top Springs Ltd.

Invest SVG said it was hopeful that in 2013 the programme could accommodate even more students and have an even greater impact.

The agency said it was grateful to the Ministry of Education for endorsing the programme, the partners for accommodating the students, and the principals, teachers and parents of the students who participated.

The other students who participated were: Shamarsh Adams, Daniel Anderson, Jeussana Bacchus, Zenica Francis, Avadil Hamilton, Antonique Jack, Jerron Morris, and Roxanne Richards.
