Rotaract Club of Kingstown donates books to National Library

The books were donated by the Rotaract Club of Kingstown to the National Library, as part of the clubâs literacy campaign which runs from July to November annually.
The collection includes a number of literary classics, which Rotaract Club Kingstown Service Director Sylicia Lynch said she hopes would promote educational development, at a time when reading is no longer a leisure activity for most children.
âOver the years it seems as though youths have found other means to entertain themselves. No longer is picking up a book, flipping through its pages and being drawn into the imaginary world of the author thought to be fun.
âIt is our hope that our donation encourages participants of this summer program to leave with renewed enthusiasm for reading and educational development.â
In accepting the donation, librarian Donna Mclean thanked the club for the gesture, which she believes would help in the promotion of reading skills and build pride.
âThis year, we decided to use culture as our theme⦠and we wanted the children to see how to have fun without the computer, which seems to be keeping our children insideâ¦.â
The CLAP for Fun program came to a close last Friday at the National Library.(JJ)
