Lions Club South presents awards to six needy secondary school students
Among the recipients of the awards was Joshuana Alexander, who received $3,130 for the first yearâs expenses, which covers the cost of books, uniforms, lunch and transportation.
Alexander placed 9th overall (5th for girls) in this yearâs Common Entrance Examinations.
Britney Browne received a partial scholarship of $1,500 for the first year, which is expected to cover additional books, uniforms, lunch and transportation.
Browne and Alexander will be attending the Girlsâ High School.
The club also came to the assistance of Noeline Drayton, a third form student at the Adelphi Secondary School who received $1,830 to cover the cost of books, uniforms, lunch and transportation.
Lion Rosita Snagg, Chair of the Scholarship Committee, announced that there are three other students whom the club is assisting with their secondary school education.
The funding is for a five-year period, once the student maintains the required standards.
According to Snagg, the committee reviewed a lot of applications, but Alexanderâs case was clear.
âWe knew immediately that we had to assist Joshuanna,â Snagg said.
The clubâs president, Ronald Christopher, said that requests for assistance began pouring in immediately following the Common Entrance Exams this year.
He said that the club met and discussed, before activating the committee to look at the matter.
Those chosen went through a thorough selection process.
âThey might not be the top students, but surely they are the most needy students,â Christopher said.
He urged the parents present to ensure that their children do as they are supposed to.
âThere is no reason that they should reach to school late, be absent from school or donât have their books,â he said.
He also reminded the recipients of their responsibility to always be respectful and to take their education seriously, because it was through education that they would be in a position to help their family come out of poverty. (DD)
