Along with messages of congratulation and encouragement to continue into higher education, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves warned the graduates to take their education seriously, so that they do not fall prey to those who would use and abuse them.
âMake sure you are putting something aside for your house and your land,â he explained.
He warned the female graduates against being dependant on men to take care of their financial needs.
âWhen things ainât work outâ¦woman gone and woman dey!â he told them.
He also had a message for the male graduates.
âThere are a lot of ladies out there, including some older ones they call âcougarsâ, who want to take advantage of the young men,â insisted Gonsalves
He also urged them to think carefully when it comes to deciding where and what to study – especially in regard to cost.
âWe have good universities in the Caribbean,â he explained. âYou donât want to go and spend so much moneyâ¦and when you come back you canât even buy a âskettelâ car.â
Gonsalves reminded the 730 graduates that they are a product of the education revolution, despite the âdoubting Thomasesâ who think that nothing good ever comes out of St Vincent and the Grenadines.
âThe future of St Vincent and the Grenadines is inâ¦excellent hands. The younger generation [is] brighter, sharper, more ambitious⦠I want to see you be parts of the whole,â he said.
âBy the year 2025, we must have at least one university graduate on an average per household.â
He also said that the graduatesâ achievements were testimony to the decision to integrate the four divisions of the SVG Community College.
âSince the college has obtained its autonomy, it has grown in leaps and bounds,â he pointed out.
On a more jovial note, the Prime Minister commented that stores in Kingstown had experienced an increased turnover in shoe sales over the past few days.
âI see a lot of nice, new shoes⦠Some flatâ¦some wedgesâ¦even one or two high heels⦠and donât talk about the hairdressing and nails!â he chuckled.
âItâs your graduation – nice up yourself. This is your time!â added Gonsalves.
He urged them to keep moving forward despite any set-backs that may befall them along the way.
âTrust in God, keep your focus and you will be fine,â he reassured them. âThe world is at your feet. Do not restrain your ambition.â(JV)
