PM ‘keeps it real’ with SVGCC graduates

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves has urged the 2012 graduates of the SVG Community College to keep their long-term goals in mind, as well as enjoying the “nice times”.{{more}}

Along with messages of congratulation and encouragement to continue into higher education, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves warned the graduates to take their education seriously, so that they do not fall prey to those who would use and abuse them.

“Make sure you are putting something aside for your house and your land,” he explained.

He warned the female graduates against being dependant on men to take care of their financial needs.

“When things ain’t work out…woman gone and woman dey!” he told them.

He also had a message for the male graduates.

“There are a lot of ladies out there, including some older ones they call ‘cougars’, who want to take advantage of the young men,” insisted Gonsalves

He also urged them to think carefully when it comes to deciding where and what to study – especially in regard to cost.

“We have good universities in the Caribbean,” he explained. “You don’t want to go and spend so much money…and when you come back you can’t even buy a ‘skettel’ car.”

Gonsalves reminded the 730 graduates that they are a product of the education revolution, despite the “doubting Thomases” who think that nothing good ever comes out of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

“The future of St Vincent and the Grenadines is in…excellent hands. The younger generation [is] brighter, sharper, more ambitious… I want to see you be parts of the whole,” he said.

“By the year 2025, we must have at least one university graduate on an average per household.”

He also said that the graduates’ achievements were testimony to the decision to integrate the four divisions of the SVG Community College.

“Since the college has obtained its autonomy, it has grown in leaps and bounds,” he pointed out.

On a more jovial note, the Prime Minister commented that stores in Kingstown had experienced an increased turnover in shoe sales over the past few days.

“I see a lot of nice, new shoes… Some flat…some wedges…even one or two high heels… and don’t talk about the hairdressing and nails!” he chuckled.

“It’s your graduation – nice up yourself. This is your time!” added Gonsalves.

He urged them to keep moving forward despite any set-backs that may befall them along the way.

“Trust in God, keep your focus and you will be fine,” he reassured them. “The world is at your feet. Do not restrain your ambition.”(JV)
