DeFreitas is GHS Student of the Year
More than fifty awards and prizes were dished out last week, as the 128 graduates of the class of 2012 were recognized for their academic and other performances, at the graduation ceremony of the Girlsâ High School.{{more}}
The ceremony, which took place on Thursday, June 26 at the Kingstown Methodist Church, saw Form Five Science Student Alexandra DeFreitas taking home the prestigious Student of the Year award, donated by Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, along with four other trophies for academic performance.
DeFreitas received New York Alumnae awards for Chemistry and Physics, and the Pauline Young award for Mathematics, as well as a special prize for French, donated by the Alliance Francaise and Flavia Haynes Howard.
For placing first in her Form Four Science of 2011/2012, DeFreitas received an award, compliments the Toronto Alumnae.
Also taking home a handful of awards was Head Girl and Form Five Science graduate Breanna Antoine.
Antoine received the Cheryl King Community Award, The Headmistressâ Award for service to the school, Dr Marguerite Roseâs Peer Mentoring Award, and the Norma Keizer Award for Leadership.
She was also among the top five prefects, as voted by the prefect body.
Form Five Plain Student Soleil Gonsalves received two awards for English (Lady Antrobus and the Governor Generalâs Awards), as well as the Millicent Byron Award for History, donated by the New York Alumnae, and the Clare Keizer prize for Information Technology.
A Toronto Alumnae Award was also presented to Gonsalves for her first place in Form Four Plain, during the 2011/2012 school year.
Other multiple awardees included Lletta Lewis, who was awarded for Biology (New York Alumnae), Spanish, Geography (Gladys Hadley), and a special top five prefect prize.
Nneka Morris received awards for Communication (Theresa Daniel) and Economics (New York Alumnae), Shanka Edwards for Sports and top five prefect, and Shada Burgin for Commercial Work/Office Administration (Professional Secretarial consultancy Service) and Electronic Document Preparation Management.
The Graduating class of 2011 was also recognized for their record-breaking performance in the CSEC examinations.
The feature address was delivered by Norlan Gabriel, General Manager of First Citizens Investment Services Ltd.
The ceremony was held under the theme âCelebrating the Dawn of a New Beginningâ.(JJ)
