Last Tuesday, June 19, Pastor Sigmund Wiggins, accompanied by members of the church’s board (Claydon Ollivierre, Beulah Samuel and Laurel Thomas) handed over a cheque for $1,000 to Chairman of the Society Patricia Cumberbatch, at the Society’s headquarters in New Montrose.

Pastor Wiggins, in handing over the cheque, said that his church had raised the funds specifically with the NSPD in mind, with hopes to assist persons with disabilities.

“We are happy to be a part of what is happening at the NSPD and we are happy to be assisting those who are not as fortunate as we are: those who are disabled, but not differently able.

“For the past five years we have been partnering with this Society in ensuring that the folks with disabilities have the same exposure as any normal individual.”

Cumberbatch thanked the pastor and church for the gesture, indicating that the funds were well appreciated and would go a long way in the development of those for whom it was intended.

Cumberbatch noted that as the NSPD celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, persons with disabilities have come a long way.

“No longer are the days when persons with disabilities will sit back and have the able-bodied persons making decisions for them. There are those who would not be able to make decisions for themselves, but there are those who are creative and have the ability.

“Disability is not inability; give us the opportunity and you will see our creativity. You just have to give us the opportunity to learn, to earn and to own.”

The Society’s anniversary slogan is: NSPD, Vibrant and Alive at 25, Inspired to go Forward. (JJ)
