Cumberbatch out shines other Dads to win Courts Super Dad

It wasn’t a walk in the park, but for Arnos Vale/Upper Cane Hall resident Elroy Cumberbatch, he had what it took to be crowned furniture and appliance giants Courts Super Dad.{{more}}

The 26-year-old father of a three-year-old son outshone five other dads, to earn the coveted title, as the highly anticipated seven-stage challenge took place last Saturday, June 16, one day before Father’s Day, at the Kingstown showroom floor.

Urged on by supporters as well as Courts customers and staff, Cumberbatch completed the tasks within the allotted 15 minutes, and also received points from the judges for the techniques used in handling the ‘infant’ and the performance of the tasks.

The tasks consisted of making a bed while holding a baby, changing the baby, taking a photo of the child and uploading the picture on a laptop computer; sweeping the floor, connecting a DVD player to a television set, playing a lullaby on a stereo to put baby to sleep, and emailing the photo taken earlier to friends and family.

Cumberbatch said, after narrowly outpointing another father to take the top spot, that the competition was indeed a challenge for him, but after a while, everything else came naturally.

“The hardest part for me was making the bed with the child in my hand, but things like changing the diaper and being on the computer, I am used to that, so it got easy for me.

“It was a good experience for me. I would like to thank Courts for the opportunity to be in a competition like this, because there is not usually anything for Father’s Day so this was a good thing,” Cumberbatch added.

For winning the challenge, Cumberbatch received $2,000, along with dinner for two at High Tide Restaurant.

All other fathers also received dinner for two at High Tide, with second placed dad George Brudy also receiving a grocery voucher to shop at CK Greaves, and Grayson Stephens, who was best at making the bed while holding the “infant,” also receiving a grocery voucher from CK Greaves.

The other fathers were Kevin Clarke, Fitzroy Hall and Hamilton Daize.

Marketing Manager at Courts Alexis John said that Courts was pleased to reward the fathers on their special day and hoped to make the event a part of their annual calendar.

“Very often dads are overlooked for their positive contributions in the home and society. We at Courts are taking this opportunity to recognize them and reward them for their efforts,” John said.

John added that the men are all winners, and formed a bond during the competition.
