Founded by Bequia native Yvette Glynn-Hamlet, the Knapsack Project distributes knapsacks filled with school supplies and other items to less fortunate school children in this country.

The Project is based in Ontario, Canada, where Glynn-Hamlet resides, and is facilitated through the generous support of her colleagues, relatives and friends, who pack knapsacks with school supplies for distribution to children in Saint Vincent and Bequia.

The Knapsack Project began in 2007, with an initial distribution of 169 knapsacks. The 2012 Edition saw 325 Knapsacks distributed to eight schools: Sion Hill Government School, St Joseph’s Convent – Marriaqua, Gomea Methodist School, Buccament Government School, Belair Government School, Cane End Government School, Westwood Methodist School, Brighton Methodist School, Bequia Anglican Primary School, Paget Farm Government School and Bequia Sunshine School for Children with Special Needs. To date, 1965 children have received knapsacks and supplies through the Project.

In SVG, the Knapsack Project is supported by the Ministry of Education, which assists in the clearance, transportation and distribution of the knapsacks. Glynn-Hamlet noted that the Minister of Education Girlyn Miguel has been a key ally of the Project over the years and that her personal commitment to the Project has helped tremendously in facilitating the process.

Travelling to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to assist in the delivery of the 2012 Project were Daniella Glynn-Jarvis of Canada and Carmen Fitzpatrick of the USA. Also providing key support were Jasmine Quammie, Mr Olsen, Lucien Glynn and Philmore Tannis of Canada; Myrna Bramble and Ronnette Lewis of Saint Vincent and Nicole and Bentley Glynn of Bequia.

Glynn-Hamlet attributes the success of the project to God, noting that His continued blessings allow her to do His work in helping the poorest of the poor. With His help, she promises to continue with the Project in 2013.
