Headstart Pre-School gets first-hand lesson on nature

In celebration of Child’s Month 2012, which is being observed under the theme “Education: Our Future – Teach us Well”, the Headstart Pre-School is undertaking a number of activities to engage both parents and students.{{more}} The school embarked on field trips to the Montreal Garden to teach the preschoolers about nature. The experienced teachers used the opportunity for practical application of academic work as the students expertly identified the various colours of the plants and flowers that they encountered.

One flower that was very popular with the children was the Anthurium Lily. It was no wonder, therefore, that, along with a card that read “I love you Mom”, this was the flower that the youngsters surprised their unsuspecting but appreciative mothers with at the Mothers’ Day Luncheon held at the school in Villa on May 14.

Mothers and children alike were served a remarkable lunch in a restaurant-like setting. After having ended a lunch date with her child one grateful mother commended the school’s principal, Lavinia Francis, stating that the teachers and the students had outdone themselves.

Understanding the importance of supporting learning and development through assessment, Headstart Pre-School conducted its Parents’ Day meeting on May 15 as it does every year in the month of May (Child’s Month). Each student was assessed under various developmental categories including Speech and Language Development, Cognitive Development, and Motor Skills Development. Parents were given an opportunity to receive feedback on how their children are developing, to ask questions and to address any concerns. Ultimately, the goal of this exercise is to support and enhance each child’s future learning.

Education Officer stationed in the Early Childhood Care division of the Curriculum Development Unit, Cecile Harry, lauded Headstart Pre-School for offering a holistic program that produces well rounded individuals.

Headstart Pre-School will wrap up its child month activities with a dental visit later this week and its Annual Sports Day next week.
