Students undergo peer counselling and helping training

Twenty students of the St.Vincent Grammar School, along with seven students of the Thomas Saunders Secondary School have recently concluded training in Peer Counselling/helping.{{more}}

The students, drawn from third and fourth forms, covered twenty units of work over a period of six weeks, in basic counselling skills and techniques.

In their capacity as peer counsellors, these students will be expected to help their peers who may be facing difficulties, and would rather speak to them (the peer helpers) instead of adults.

In this regard, they serve a supporting role to that of the school counsellor. They will also act as brokers between their “helpees” and their school counsellors, since they will be expected to refer certain issues to them.

Training was conducted at the Grammar School by the school counsellor, Heather Richards and Abner Richards, a counsellor in training (under the supervision of the school counsellor). Kimsha Williams, a science teacher at the school, also assisted with some training and lending general support to the students.

These students are the second set to be trained and will serve for the remainder of this academic year until 2014.
