Spears for invasive lionfish – Tobago Cays Marine Park

The Tobago Cays Marine Park (TCMP) is now equipped to assist with the eradication of the lionfish.{{more}}

This invasive species, which was first discovered late last year in SVG, poses a serious threat to marine life in this country.

On May 3, Alan Silverstein, President of Canouan Dive Center handed over to the rangers of TCMP, four sets lionfish spears and a first aid kit valued at USD$1,000.00 (EC$2700.00).

It is Silverstein’s hope that the spears will be used for the demise of the lionfish. He sees his donation as the beginning of a fruitful partnership between the TCMP and Canouan Dive.

Silverstein views the Tobago Cays as the most beautiful place on earth, and it must be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Hyron Joseph, Chief Ranger of the TCMP expressed his gratitude to Silverstien. He went on to state that the TCMP has been longing for persons like Silverstein to come forward and assist with the protection of the park’s resources. Joseph also expressed the hope that other persons/stakeholders will follow suit and become guardians of the TCMP.

There was also a commitment from Silverstein for four sets of scuba gear, which will be presented to the Park Rangers later this month.
