This day is held every year, on the fourth Thursday in April. âGirls in ICT Dayâ is the direct result of the adoption of Resolution 70 by the International Telecommunications Unionâs (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference in Guadalajara, Mexico, in October 2010.
Some 215 third and fourth form female students from 25 secondary schools across St Vincent and the Grenadines were privileged to be a part of this activity, organized by the Department of Telecommunications, Science and Technology.
Students visited 31 private sector and Government agencies for a two-hour session.
The girls were enlightened on how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are used in the day-to-day activities of the workplace and were encouraged to get involved in ICTs so that they can be empowered for their future careers.
The students expressed their appreciation for the opportunity afforded them to be exposed to ICTs utilized at the workplace. They were very enthusiastic and a large number of them are already planning on the ICT field they would like to pursue.
The Department of Telecommunications, Science and Technology extends its heartfelt thanks to the private sector and other government agencies who willingly accepted the opportunity to collaborate with them to share their ICT experiences and expertise with the students.
May 17 is designated as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) and, coincidentally, the theme is âWomen and Girls in ICTâ.
Two of the activities planned to commemorate that day are a poster competition for students up to 21 years of age, and a March and Rally to be held at Heritage Square from 1:30 p.m. the same day.
The public is invited to attend. Please contact the Department of Telecommunications, Science and Technology at 456-1223 for more information.
