100 trees planted at Montreal Watershed

The Lions Club South, in collaboration with the Forestry Department, on April 25 planted 100 trees at the Montreal Watershed.{{more}} This is in keeping with the 2011- 2012 International President Wing-Kun Tam’s theme, of planting a million trees worldwide in an effort to demonstrate the strength of the Lions global network.

The International President explains, “An important part of our extension of service this year is caring for our environment. Every tree planted by a Lion is a part of a large-scale effort by members around the world to make a significant impact on the environment.” He reminded Lions that “if we accomplish this goal, it proves once again that we can accomplish anything- just like we did when we exceeded our goal for Campaign Sight First II; just like we did when we prevented over one million cases of river blindness and just like we are going to do by helping eradicating measles.”

Speaking at a brief ceremony following the tree planting exercise, Forestry Supervisor Cornelius Richards said that “within recent times there has been far too many instances of deforestation within the forest reserves and this has contributed to the decline in certain species which are essential for the environment.” He further explained that the Department has embarked on a reforestation drive in the area as the Montreal watershed contributes 40 percent of potable water to households across SVG and they are pleased to support and applaud the effort of the Lions Club South.

The 100 species of trees, including Blue Mahoe, Galba and Fiddle wood, planted by the Lions Club South of St Vincent will complement the 8,262, 335 trees already planted by Lions around the world.

Lions from the Lions Club South who participated in the event were very excited with the tree planting project at the Montreal Watershed, as it was viewed as part of their contribution to global biodiversity. The Lions are committed to making it an annual project and further pledged their commitment to ongoing projects of this nature.

The Tree Planting project by the Lions Club South also coincided with the 42nd anniversary celebrations of World Earth Day in SVG, last Sunday.
