Students rewarded at 2011 National Awards Ceremony

The academic performances of this country’s outstanding Caribbean Examination Council (CXC), CSEC and Common Entrance students for last year, did not go unnoticed by education officials and the corporate community.{{more}}

Last Friday April 20, at the 2011 National Awards Ceremony held at the Methodist Church in Kingstown, close to 200 students received trophies, plaques, and other prizes, from this country’s Ministry of Education, along with telecommunications provider LIME, the event’s sponsor.

Last week’s event saw the top eleven performers at the 2011 Common Entrance, headed by former Kingstown Preparatory School student Alron Harry, being lauded for their performances.

Also recognized for doing well, were the top student from each secondary school, as well as the students who passed, five, six, seven, eight subjects after remediation; with Deondre Griffith of the Central Leeward Secondary School being recognized as the top female performer after remediation having passed eight subjects, and Georgetown Secondary School student Mervan Edwards cited as the top male student after remediation. He also passed eight subjects.

The Girls’ High School once again led the way as the school with the Best CSEC Results, with the Union Island Secondary School awarded the School with the Best Results after Remediation and the Intermediate High School receiving the Most Improved School Award.

In the disciplines category, GHS past student River Providence took top honors for humanities; Joann Chapman of the St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown received the award for home economics, St. Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua student Rhiana Bruce-Lyle was commended in the discipline of creative/performing arts/ physical education and sport disciplines and Jomel John of the Bishop’s College Kingstown for Industrial Technology.

Former GHS student and 2011 valedictorian Kayrel Edwards blew away all else, by claiming the Top Overall Student Award, which went along fittingly with her awards in the science, business and modern languages disciplines.

Currently a first year student of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, Edwards was described as a natural leader, who was commended for her attendance, punctuality, athletic ability, and of course academic performances.

Deputy Chief Education Officer in the Ministry of Education Beverly Neptune, along with Country Manager of LIME Leslie Jack addressed the gathering at the hall, which was packed with parents, teachers and well wishers.

Chief Education Officer Lou-Anne Gilchrist also read a presentation from Minster of Education Girlyn Miguel, who was absent due to her duties as deputy Prime Minister.
