This session centred on the topic of disaster preparedness as a priority in the fight against Climate Change. The program included remarks from the President of the GHS Young Leaders Niasha Mofford, and presentations on the school and home disaster plans, developed by the GHS Young Leaders.

These presentations were made by Kaela Barrett, Angelique Fitzpatrick and Kimberly Prescott respectively.

The Young Leaders unveiled new commercials, filmed in collaboration with their major sponsor VINLEC. Additionally, there was a short handing over ceremony, where Rebecca Lewis presented a First Aid kit to the St Vincent Girls’ High School on behalf of the Lewis Pharmacy. Following this, Shadyn McLean presented fifteen First Aid kits to NEMO on behalf of the GHS Young Leaders. These First Aid kits are to be distributed to emergency shelters around the nation. In the latter part of the event, the guest speaker Michelle Forbes, Acting Director of NEMO, enlightened the audience on disasters that could potentially plague St Vincent and the Grenadines and how we, as citizens, can be prepared for these by developing disaster plans similar to those presented during the sessions.

It is hoped that participants in this symposium would be able to implement disaster plans in their respective institutions. By so doing, they would be better able to face not only disasters resulting from Climate Change, but also other natural and man-made disasters that may strike. As the GHS Young Leaders theme says: “Our world, Our climate, Our problem, Our solution.”
