The competition, now in its 10th year, saw competitors from Dominica, Guadeloupe, French Guyana, Jamaica, Martinique, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago. Each competitor was required to render a national/folk song and a popular song in the language of their choice.
Kelsie, the eleventh of twelve contestants and the third student to represent St Vincent and the Grenadines and the Girlsâ High School in this competition, rendered Becketâs âSt Vincent My Homelandâ and Jennifer Hudsonâs âI am Changingâ. Both renditions thrilled the audience and brought screams and thunderous applause from everyone present.
After the performances she was approached by one woman who said: âYour rendition stirred all sorts of emotions in me. I cried, had goose bumps, was excited and at one point did not know how to feel. I have never felt this way from hearing a song. Congratulations and keep singing!â
When asked how she felt about her victory, Kelsie calmly said, âAt one point I was numb, but I am happy as this is the first competition I have wonâ.
She was accompanied by Deputy Headmistress of the GHS, Michele Beache.
