Tech Education Division displays skills to public

Students of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, Division of Technical and Vocational Education this week displayed the skills they are learning at the institution.{{more}}

On Tuesday, the college hosted an open day, which allowed each department of that Division to portray projects they had been working on for the semester. The event coincided with the school’s 40th anniversary celebrations held under the theme “Appreciating our past, Enriching our future.”

Giving brief remarks as he welcomed persons to the Division’s open day, Dean of the Division Osbourne Bowens stated that marking 40 years as an educational intuition was a great achievement. “Having been doing this for forty years, we must have been doing something right,” he stated.

He added that the Division of Technical Education graduates have made an impact on the job market and in the development of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

“Within every job market in SVG, you can find a graduate from the Division of Technical and Vocational Education, and it is an indication that we have been doing an excellent job for the development of St. Vincent and the Grenadines,” Bowens said.

During our visit, SEARCHLIGHT visited the Sales and Marketing and the Building and Construction Departments and interacted with students who proudly displayed their projects.

The young women of the Sales and Marketing department presented their S&M (Sales and Marketing) Wine as a part of a sales promotion and customer service project. Ashieka Medica, a student in that department, stated that their presentation included a variety of wines made from local fruits such as Pineapple, Mint, Ginger, and Strawberry.

“It’s all about sales promotion and visual merchandising, how products should be presented, how attractive they should look,” another student, Shaffique Nanton, explained.

The students also expressed their excitement in being part of Sales and Marketing.

“Well, the sales and marketing programme is a very exciting one. It deals with different segments such as accounting, sales, advertising, and you get to know different people and experience different personalities,” Medica said.

Nanton also encouraged prospective students of the Division to try Sales and Marketing. “You get to meet new people, knowing that we do almost over 20 different courses – psychology and human relations, so we get to know how to relate to people and how to sell our products to different people.”

Second year students of the Building and Construction department made model houses as part of their presentation. Student Shantal Quammie told SEARCHLIGHT that the students drew plans, then used plywood to build the structures. Quammie added that the houses have several finishes, including lattice, and different types of roofs.

The students also displayed different types of wall structures, such as the way the corner of a building would appear and the intersecting wall.(OS)
