Lucy-Ann Cato passes

Lucy-Ann Alexandra Cato, wife of the former prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Robert Milton Cato, passed away earlier this week.{{more}}

Cato, who was 89 years old, died on Monday morning at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, this country’s premier medical facility, named in her late husband’s honour in 2000.

Born in Nevis, Lucy-Ann was a talented musician who often played classics on the piano at her home at Ratho Mill. It is said that she met her future husband Robert Milton while they were both passengers on a boat.

In her quiet, dignified manner, Cato served on the St. Vincent Infant Welfare Maternity League, the Thompson Home Committee and the St. Vincent Music Council.

In an interview with the National Broadcasting Corporation earlier this week, Prime Mnister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves described Cato as a “gentle woman, who loved the people of this country.” He also said she was an excellent wife to her husband, and in the years following her husband’s death, “she continued to carry herself with utmost dignity”.

He extended his sincere condolences to her relatives on behalf of the government and people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Leader of the Opposition Arnhim Eustace also expressed condolences on behalf of the New Democratic Party and his family.

The funeral service for the late Lucy-Ann Cato will take place on Wednesday, March 28 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Calliaqua.

Viewing of the body will be from 2:00 to 2:55 p.m., and the funeral service will begin at 3:00 p.m. She will be buried in the churchyard next to her husband, who died on February 10, 1997, at the age of 81 years.
