Rotary Club to deliver more 2000 books to 13 secondary schools

The second phase of the Rotary Club of St. Vincent International Literacy Project is expected to begin shortly, with the distribution of more than two thousand books to 13 secondary schools.{{more}}

The books are expected to be distributed as early as next week, as the club celebrates Literacy Month this month, as part of their promotion and drive towards literacy throughout St Vincent and the Grenadines.

In 2011, 2250 books were distributed to 12 secondary schools, in the first phase of the initiative.

The project is being executed in collaboration with the Mustique Charitable Trust, which approved the club’s proposal to provide all secondary schools with books, to the tune of $10,400.

According to a release from the Club, the literacy projects aims to ensure that children have access to basic education, reduce gender disparity in education, increase adult literacy, strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy and toe support studies related to basic education and literacy.

Some of the books distributed are written by local authors, including Karen Hinds and Dr Jules Ferdinand, while other books include publications from Oxford University Press, Tree Tops – Carnival King, My Friend Mandela, Celebrating Black History. Other books include Biographies and Novels, Children’s level 1-4 books, teen novels, motivational and self help books.(JJ)
