LIME donates computer to CTAWU

LIME, St Vincent and the Grenadines premiere telecommunications provider, has answered a request made by Commercial Allied and Technical Workers Union (CTAWU) and donated a Lenovo desktop computer to the Union’s General Secretary Burns Bonadie.{{more}}

The donation was made last Tuesday, February 7, as the Union celebrated its 50th Anniversary.

The CTAWU was formed in 1962 and at the time, represented workers from the Sanitation Department, CDC (now VINLEC), and Public Works. It was not until 1965 that the Union started to represent workers from Cable and Wireless under the Presidency of Dick Neverson, former Commercial Manager. Several ex-Cable and Wireless workers of note like Lucian ‘Saluche’ Small, Alice Mandeville, Brinsley Nickie and Lloyd Small played significant roles in making the CTAWU one of the most respected Unions in the Caribbean. It was because of the work of the Union in the 1960s that saw the late Governor General Sir Charles Antrobus being appointed the first local General Manager of Cable and Wireless in the Caribbean.

“We are extremely thankful to LIME for this donation,” said Bonadie. “This gesture demonstrates that the new industrial climate today allows for partnerships. Gone are the days of ‘banging on the desk’, since workers are today enjoying better working conditions and greater personal benefits. Our union is responsible for looking after all industrial matters for the staff of Cable and Wireless, now LIME, for over the last forty seven years. The relationship has been very cordial over the years and we look forward to continuing in this manner. LIME has been a major employer over the years and workers have contributed to the overwhelming success of the business,” continued Bonadie at the handing over event which took place at the LIME headquarters at Halifax Street.

General Manager Leslie Jack made the presentation and commented: “LIME understands the importance of organizations like the Union to the development of our human resources. It is also important that they have the right communication tools in this information age. This donation is just another way of exhibiting the excellent relationship between the CTAWU and LIME. We are confident that this donation will enhance the operations and efficiency of the office. This is also a token of our appreciation for the partnership between the Union and LIME, and we look forward to an even more harmonious working relationship in the future.”

This donation to the CTAWU comes just two weeks after LIME donated a laptop to John Augustus Roache, local Unsung Hero and Community Worker from Mayreau.
