Fancy Government School Reading Extravanganza begins

The students and teachers of the Fancy Government School began their Reading Extravaganza exercise on Monday, February 6, 2012.{{more}}

The opening took the form of a march through the village, with the students and teachers of the primary and preschool singing to the tune – “We shall overcome, we shall overcome, we shall overcome someday. Deep in our hearts, we want to read, we shall overcome some day.”

Following this, they gathered at the school for a mini rally which saw cultural presentations and other reading activities taking place. The keynote speaker at the rally was Elva Springer, Headteacher of the Owia Government School who spoke to the children on the the importance of Reading.

Other presentations were also heard from representative of the Ministry of Education Hannah Browne and the principal of the Fancy Pre-School Juney Baptiste, who both encouraged the children to learn to read because of its importance in their everyday lives.

The week’s activities came to an end on Wednesday, February 8, 2012. On Tuesday, February 7, there was a reading/comprehension competition and a math table competition.

On Wednesday, there was an open day activity in the morning, during which parents read to their children.

Following this, there was a public speaking competition in the intermediate and senior sections.

The reading extravaganza this year is celebrated under the theme – “Hats off to reading!!-get it! Love it! Cherish it!”
