Paget Farm students raise hats to Reading
Reading is power! Reading is cool! Read to succeed! Those were some of the themes in the recently concluded Paget Farm Government School âHats off to readingâ.{{more}} The school held a week of activities from Monday, January 23, and ended with a March and Rally from the school to the Paget Farm Community Centre on Friday, January 27, 2012. The fun-filled week included inter-class Reading competitions, amongst other reading activities.
Speaking at the climax of the activities at the community centre, Headteacher of the school Devon Ollivierre urged students to keep reading because Reading opens up oneâs understanding. He advised parents to encourage their children to read as often as possible and that they themselves should develop a positive attitude towards Reading.
Also present was Zoe Cordice, representative from the Epitoma Foundation, who relayed to the audience her experience of not learning to read at an early age. She reassured persons, however, that itâs never too late to learn how to read.
The students displayed, using various talents, how important Reading is and the disadvantages of not knowing how to read. The audience was amused by a skit portraying a man who bought breadcrumbs instead of Quaker Oats because he couldnât read.
The highly anticipated âBest Hatâ competition, where students with the most creative hat in class were selected was also a very interesting part of the event. Prizes were also given to the winners of the Reading competition and most outstanding and improved readers in each class.
The librarians of the newly opened Paget Farm Community Library (PFCL) had a question and answer segment for the students about books that were read to them during a trip to the library.
The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) had a raffle for a food hamper, where Kathy Ann Miller emerged the winner. The PTA as well as the PFCL donated supplies to the school ranging from books, to art supplies and even recorders.
The event was deemed a success by organizers and is expected to be bigger and better next year.
