Diamond Government School celebrates Reading Week 2012

The staff and students of the Diamond Government School celebrated its Reading Extravaganza week from January 23 to 27, 2012. The week’s activities were commemorated under the theme “Read Today, Read Always, Stay Literate.” {{more}}This theme was submitted by a Grade 3 student, Lisa Williams. She also composed a chant which children echoed enthusiastically at the close of the week’s activities.

During the week, students were involved in reading, writing and speaking activities in their classrooms and at General Assembly. One of the highlights of the week was the Book Review in which students from Grade 1 to Grade 6 participated. A quiz in General Knowledge and a Spelling B competition were held on Wednesday, 25th January. Kimon Bibby (Grade 6), Aphia Jacobs (Grade 3) and Arianna Jack(Grade 1), representing Green House, were judged the winners of the aforementioned competitions.

The week climaxed on Friday with a display of students’ written expressions and a grand showcase of students reading skills. The staff, parents and well-wishers were on hand to enjoy the performances which were done in various forms (songs, drama, poetry, dialogue, speech, stories and advertisement). The Headteacher, Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson, in her brief remarks, reminded students of the importance of reading in their daily lives.

At the end of this activity, which was chaired energetically by Hannah Harry, Jasmine Spencer offered words of appreciation and encouraged all to read always as the theme suggested.

Outstanding students were also rewarded for their hard work which led to the success of the week.
