GHS shines at Bible Search Quiz Awards Ceremony 2011

The Girls’ High School (GHS) shone brightly at this years Secondary School Bible Search Quiz (SSBQ) Awards Ceremony, receiving all three awards for participation in the quiz this year.{{more}}

The awards ceremony was held on Wednesday December 14, 2011, at the National Public Library.

The Girls’ High School was awarded the Most Outstanding School for the year, while student Kenecia Charles was awarded for the most frequent participation. Past student Jonelle Cadougan received an award for being the most outstanding CSEC performer who participated in the quiz.

Headmistress of the GHS Andrea Bowman said that she was extremely proud of the girls. Bowman added that she particularly pleased that the students had embraced the text based approach to their study of the Bible and by extension Christianity. The school was awarded $1,000 and a $400 voucher from Coreas Hazells Inc. This is the second year that the school has won the award.

Referring to Charles, who was awarded the frequent participant award, Bowman stated that she has always been an outstanding student.

“Kenecia is a fighter in that Kenecia has had to overcome a great deal,” Bowman said.

Charles told SEARCHLIGHT that she has been a participant of the Quiz since 2005 and expressed her happiness upon receiving the award.

According to Coordinator of the SSBQ Joel Jack, in order to become eligible for the most frequent participant award, students would have to enter the quiz at least five months within the year. The year of the quiz runs from December to November.

Charles also related that as she researched for the quiz, learning the scriptures and putting them into action, it encouraged her to want to participate more. Her participation in the quiz, she stated, has had a great impact on her life. Charles was awarded a cheque for $450.

Also attesting to the positive impact of the SSBQ on her life, former GHS student Cadougan had the honour of being the first student to receive the SSBQ/CSEC award which was introduced this year. It awards former participants of the programme who have received the most outstanding results for CSEC subjects.

Cadougan, who stated that she has participated in the programme since she was a third form student at the GHS, expressed her happiness upon receiving her award. “I’m happy because I always wanted an Ipad,” she said, smiling. Cadougan also received a $50 voucher.

According to Cadougan, her participation in the SSBQ over the years has helped her to become a better person. She is also close to achieving one of her primary goals of reading the entire Bible. Cadougan also offered words of encouragement for prospective participants of the SSBQ.

“I think they should participate because it is a good initiative and they get to learn about what God has planned for our lives,” she said.
