River: Award trip was an experience like no other

Providence, along with thirteen other students from the Caribbean, received her prizes from the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) during a ceremony at the Hyatt Regency in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, on December 1, 2011.
Seventeen-year-old River, a former student of the Girlsâ High School, is the recipient of the award for the Most Outstanding Candidate in the Humanities for 2011.
Speaking about her experience in Trinidad and Tobago, Providence said that it was an experience âlike no other.â
She added that the energy of the people in Trinidad was also remarkable.
âI donât think Iâve experienced anything like that before, â she said.
Providence, who was accompanied to Trinidad by her mother and twin sister, also stated that she made âfriends for lifeâ with other awardees during the trip.
The trip included courtesy calls to several government officials, including the President George Maxwell Richards and the Minister of Education Tim Gopeesingh by the Regional Top Awardees and a CXC Delegation.
The awardees also got a taste of the culture Trinidad and Tobago as they visited both a mas camp and a pan yard, as well as attended a Diwali presentation, on Wednesday, November 30.
The awardees and a CXC delegation also visited Tobago on Tuesday, November 29, and were guests of the Tobago House of Assembly for the day.
While on Tobago, the awardees also made a courtesy call to the Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly and visited a secondary school where they interacted with students from the island and toured places of interest.
River, the daughter of Dr. Karen Providence of Green Hill, achieved Grade I in 11 subjects, with all A Profiles, except one B Profile in Information Technology. River achieved Grade I in Biology, Caribbean History, Chemistry, English A, English B, French, Geography, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics and Social Studies.(OS)
