Relatives of woman stabbed in Bequia hoping for the best

Relatives and friends of chopping victim Givvon Bynoe say that they are praying for her to pull through her ordeal.{{more}}

Well wishers included Bynoe’s mother, her siblings, as well as the mother of her alleged attacker, who gathered at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital in Kingstown, two days after the 23-year-old Bequia resident was attacked and chopped about her body on the morning of Monday, December 5 in Bequia.

Bynoe was allegedly attacked by Deron Hazell, the father of her two children, while she was part of a group doing road cleaning work at Paget Farm.

On the morning of Wednesday, December 7, the teary eyed family members indicated that the incident, which took place two days before, was something that they never expected to happen, despite some warning signs.

Givvon’s mother Elizabeth Ragguette recounted that some days before the tragedy, Hazell told her that he was going to kill her daughter, and that she saw the suspect just moments before the attack.

“That morning, when I was going down to work, I meet him with a cutlass under his arm and holding up the cutlass. I ask him where he going and he say he going up the road to work, so I thought he was going to work.”

“When I dey working now, the news come to me that ‘Ninja’ kill Givvon, and I fall away (fainted).”

Except for hearing that Hazell had assaulted her daughter the Friday before, Ragguette said that she was unaware of any previous altercation between Bynoe, who lived with her, and Hazell, who resided with friends.

According to Bynoe’s sister Sarah, the two had been together for about five years, and have two children together, four year old Javorn, and two year old Giselle.

The older sibling said that she, too, was unaware of any rifts prior to the week before, between the two, who she said were together on most occasions, and dismissed speculations that her sister was unfaithful to her boyfriend.

“If they had any problems she didn’t say; but he hit her on Friday night.”

“Everywhere she was, he was with her. They were always together. She will come by the shop where I work almost every day… and he would come and follow her home.”

Hazell’s mother Luanda also journeyed from Bequia to show support for Bynoe and their family.

The matriarch burst into tears as she expressed her concern for the 23-year-old woman and her children, whom she said she got along well with.

“I feel it for Givvon more than I feel it for Deron. I can’t eat, I can’t sleep. It’s so unfair what he did to my grand children,” she cried.

“I wish for her the best and that she will be able to do all the things that she did before.”

The families indicated that they are trying their best to cope with the situation together, and although they are very upset about the situation, they appreciated the support of Hazell’s mother and other family members, and are trying their best to move forward.

“We don’t want to dwell on things we can’t control. We are still living loving.” Sarah noted.

Sarah, much more composed than she was just after her sister was attacked, also indicated that it was unfortunate that persons chose to post pictures of her sister taken right after the attack in a bloody state laying on the ground on the social network Facebook, and called for persons to be more thoughtful to the feeling of others and to put themselves in the place of the victims or their families.

“You can’t stop them, but they should have a level of respect for other people.”

Up to press time, Wednesday, December 7, Deron Hazell had not been charged.

The 26-year-old man turned himself in to police at the Paget Farm Police station in Bequia shortly after the attack. He was detained.
