Petit Bordel Secondary Mentorship Programme is one year old today

The Petit Bordel Secondary School Mentorship Programme celebrates its first anniversary, today, Friday, November 25, 2011.{{more}}

This programme was established in January of 2004 by Eugena Charles, the school’s counselor. Unfortunately, Charles had to complete studies overseas and as a result the programme was not opertional for a short period of time. This, however, did not hinder the success of the programme, since participants (mentors and mentees) kept in contact. The programme, however, was revived on November 25, 2010.

The main objective of this programme is to bridge the gap between our young people and the older members of our society by providing the necessary support structure that is likely to enhance the student’s social, emotional, and academic development. Mentors are expected to develop healthy relationships with their mentees through frequent communication with the mentees and parents. It is expected that the mentors will monitor student progress and conduct through consultation with them, their parents or guardians.

Over the years, mentors have been working assiduously to assist students in developing the necessary skills that are required to overcome obstacles and conflicts that are likely to hinder the students from succeeding. This may also involve the implementation of interventions from other component sources. Mentors have been guiding students in decision making, presenting different career opportunities and strategies that they can use to prevent conflict and overcome obstacles. Emphasis has been placed on teaching these mentees (students), the importance of virtues such as the golden rule, honesty, contentment, ethics, morality and perseverance, among others.

To commemorate our anniversary, the members of the mentorship programme will be hosting a luncheon today, Friday, November 25, 2011, at the Learning Resource Centre at Golden Grove, Chateaubelair. Mentees, mentors and parents will assemble to celebrate this exceptional occasion. This luncheon provides the opportunity for those involved to evaluate progress with regard to the Mentorship programme at the school, to socialize with other parents and mentees and also to plan events that should further assist these students during this stage of their development. The group has planned a Christmas Fiesta/Christmas Gingele (gin-gay-lay) on December 15, 2011, starting at 9: oo am at the school.

The Christmas fiesta/ Christmas Gingele (gin-gay-lay) aims to bring back memories of Christmas of long ago. Some activities planned for that day include Caroling competitions among different schools within the north leeward community, as well as between classes at this school, and classroom decorating competitions.. It is also expected that donkey races, drama, among others, will also be included. Food will be on sale and there will be special guest performances. We take this opportunity to invite the general public to our Christmas Fiesta/ Christmas Gingele on December 15, 2011. Join with us as we celebrate this memorable and worthwhile occasion.
