Christmas comes early at St. Benedict’s

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Teachers’ Co-operative Credit Union’s Youth Group continued on the upward path to development when they visited the St. Benedict’s Day Nursery and Infant Hospital on Saturday, November 19, 2011.{{more}} The visit was in recognition of Universal Children’s Day, celebrated on November 20 of each year.

The SVGTCCU Youths took the opportunity to present a Christmas tree to the children, along with books and other supplies from the SVGTCCU Supplies Outlet. This was phase one of the group’s two part outreach to the children of St. Benedict’s as they are presently seeking donations to deliver other goods and gifts to the nursery and hospital for Christmas.

During the visit, members of the group interacted with the children and were entertained with Christmas carols on pan by Aneisha Sutherland, a student at St. Benedict’s. On accepting the donation, Sister Nyra Anne Pajotte expressed gratitude to the SVGTCCU Youth group and challenged them to continue “touching people’s lives” as it will impact and develop their own. The St. Benedict’s Day Nursery was opened on July 25, 1963, and the infant hospital on February 13, 1968. They were both affected by the passage of Hurricane Tomas in 2010 but continue to be a place of refuge for battered and abandoned children as well as the physically and mentally challenged.
