Outstanding Gregory Deane grabs PM’s award

Another accolade has been added to Gregory Tuayev Deane’s name, as the young man was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for his outstanding performance in the A’ Level Examinations.{{more}}

Deane and five other top performers in the A’ level examinations 2010/2011 were awarded with National Scholarship Awards during the Schools’ Independence Rally held on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at the Victoria Park.

Deane, a resident of Akers and the son of Gregory Tuayev and Jannis Deane received a grade I pass in Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Math Unit 1 and also in Math Unit 2 ; grade A’s in Cambridge A’ Level Physics, Chemistry and Biology; and grade B in A’ Level General Paper. He also received a Grade 2 in Communication Studies.

During a recent interview with SEARCHLIGHT, Deane stated that he has an interest in renewable energy engineering, but is also considering other career options. He also said that he will be taking a year off to “take a break” and to contemplate on which profession he wants to pursue.

The former St. Vincent Grammar School student was also awarded $10,000 and a certificate of academic excellence. Deane was also the Top National Performer at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate Examinations in 2009.

Gavery David, also a former student of the St. Vincent Grammar School, was the second most outstanding performer in the 2011 A’ level Examinations.

The Belmont resident who did four CAPE subjects, gained grade ones in Accounts Units one and two, and Economics Unit two. He received grade two in Computer Science Units one and two, Economics Unit one, and Communication Studies. David, the son of Carol Baptiste and Phyllis David, hopes to pursue studies in Banking and Finance.

Already pursuing studies at the UWI, Cave Hill Campus, National Scholar, and former student of the St. Vincent Girls’ High School Jenell Gibson is the third most outstanding performer in the A’ Level Examinations. Gibson, the daughter of Andrew and Angella Gibson, received a grade A in Law, a grade one in Communication Studies, grade two in Computer Science Units one and two, and CAPE Economics Unit two, with a grade 3 in CAPE Economics Unit one.

National Scholar and the fourth best performer in the 2010 A’Level Examinations Lianne Wynne hopes to pursue studies in Child Psychiatry. The past St. Vincent Girls’ High School student received a grade A pass in Psychology, grade one in CAPE Caribbean Studies and CAPE Sociology Unit one; grade two in CAPE Sociology Unit 2 and CAPE Literatures in English Unit 2 and a grade 3 in Literatures in English Unit one.

She told SEARCHLIGHT she is “insanely happy” to have received a national scholarship, and thanked God, who she said gave her everything she needed to get to this point: “determination, supportive friends, great lecturers and (her) mom, Lerone Ollivierre.”

The fifth best performer in the 2011 A’ Level examination hails from Chili Village, Georgetown. The son of Kenrick and Verna Cuffy, Kenvorn Cuffy intends to pursue studies in the field of medicine. The former student of the St. Vincent Grammar School gained grade one passes in CAPE Pure Math Units one and two and CAPE Communication Studies, with Grade A’s in Chemistry and Biology. He is currently a teacher at the North Union Secondary School.

Rounding out the top six National Scholars is Shane Clarke, also a former St. Vincent Grammar School student. Clarke, a resident of Largo Height and the son of Andrew and Joan Clarke, received three grade one passes in CAPE subjects, Pure Math Units one and two, and Communication Studies. He gained grade two passes in Computer Science Units one and two and a grade B in Physics.

On Wednesday, Clarke told SEARCHLIGHT he is excited about receiving the award. He hopes to pursue studies in Engineering, but is still looking at prospective universities. He gave thanks to God, his parents and his previous teachers for their assistance. He is currently a teacher at the St. Vincent Grammar School. He teaches Physics, Integrated Science and Information Technology.

All National Scholars received a certificate award, as well as a full five year scholarship with no restrictions on an area of study. (OS)
