Jennique Shallow gets scholarship from Bunpan

Jennique Shallow is the recipient of the Marriaqua United Friendly Society (Bunpan) scholarship for 2011.{{more}}

Jennique, who attended the Marriaqua Government School and has now enrolled at the Girls High School for her secondary education, was presented with her scholarship on Thursday, September 1, 2011.

Witnessing the presentation at the Freeland headquarters of the Society were scholarship holders, parents and guardians. Also in attendance were Manager of the Society Margaret Clarke and other members of staff, together with board members Theophilus Shallow, Joel Harry and Garvin Jackson.

The scholarship is for a period of seven years, provided that Jennique maintains satisfactory academic performance and continued good membership of the society. Jennique who comes from the Marriaqua Community placed 49th by gender and 97th overall in the qualifying government-run common entrance examination, which was held in May/June 2011. She is the daughter of Theophilus and Jennifer Shallow.

The award marked the 40th scholarship since the Bunpan scholarship programme was started in 1985. Presently there are eight scholarship holders in the programme. Six are at secondary schools and two at the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College.

The presentation heard brief remarks from a number of persons. In addition to giving words of appreciation for her own participation in the scholarship programme, Kayrel Edwards gave special encouragement to the other participating Bunpan scholarship holders. Kayrel achieved exemplary results and national recognition in August 2011 when the CSEC results were released. She is now into her 6th year of her Bunpan scholarship and 1st year at the Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies of the St. Vincent & the Grenadines Community College.

Amongst other speakers were parent Elmore Edwards and scholarship holders Michael Harry, Wenique Edwards and Cody Ince. They, too, expressed satisfaction with the Bunpan programme and encouraged students to study hard and avoid distractions that will retard their education and general development.

In conclusion, President of the society Theophilus Shallow gave a brief history of the Bunpan organization which was registered in April 1954 and whose main business is the provision of funeral benefits. He also tracked the progress of past scholarship holders who have become doctors, bankers, and other notable professionals across the world.
