Montgomery Daniel: North Windward has potential!

Area representative for the North Windward constituency Montgomery Daniel says that there are opportunities for social and profitable development in that area.{{more}}

Highlighting of some of the historic sites in the area such as the Owia Salt Pond, Millionaire’s Dam, and Bloody Bridge, Daniel said “these are locations in North Windward that we can utilize for our own social and economical development.

“… North Windward is full of natural resources. The culture is one of excellence because of the nature of our Carib descendants. We would have seen the culture that has grown over the years,” Daniel explained.

The Minister also made mentioned the 2011 Calypso Monarch Maxwell ‘Tajo’ Francis as one of the many persons of talent who have emerged from his constituency.

“He (‘Tajo’) has been doing an excellent job in terms of carrying the culture and the art form in calypso in St. Vincent and the Grenadines,” the Minister added.

Daniel, who is also the Minister with responsibility for Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Rural Transformation, was at the time speaking at the handing over ceremony for five vending kiosks to the Owia Salt Pond Recreational Park.

He further noted that there is great potential for the Owia Salt Pond Recreational Park and thanked the Ministry of Tourism for working with the people of his constituency to help bring further economic benefits to that area.

He said that the vending stalls are a good starting point for the persons who now have authority to operate their business, to expose some of the local foods that can be made from the area’s natural resources.

“I know that once the vending stalls are established and individuals throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines can now recognize that they can go to Owia for a day and feel very happy with good food…

Good fish broth and cassava, which is also grown in the area, so they will be able to eat some good farine and bam bam. Potato is always there and pudding and ducuna are going to be available, and more importantly the arrowroot factory is right there so you know that you will be able to get your dumplings made from starch. I know for many people here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines starch is a favorite,” he noted.

The leases for the kiosks were handed over on Monday, October 17, at the Ministry of Tourism and Industry Conference Room, 2nd Floor, NIS Building, Kingstown, by Daniel.

The kiosks are being rented for food and beverage purposes mainly, with a requirement that a significant component of the items sold must be locally produced foods and beverages.(AA)
