Dumper flips, killing driver in Canouan

Family and friends are now mourning the death of Chesley Trimmingham, a 46-year-old tradesman of Lowmans (Windward)/Chester Cottage, who was killed on the construction site of a new hotel on Canouan last Friday, October 21.{{more}}

According to a statement from CCA Limited, the company contracted to build the hotel, at approximately 9:00 a.m., Trimmingham, an employee of Adolphus Corridon, a sub-contractor on the project, was killed when a dumper he was driving flipped.

Paula Gilchrist, cousin of the deceased man, said that she had seen him a few months ago when he came to visit her.

She explained that he had only been working in Canouan a few months.

Gilchrist told SEARCHLIGHT that Trimmingham told her that he had made a change in his life, adding that he had recently entered into a relationship and was contemplating marriage.

“He said that he had been out there and that there was nothing out there in the world for him,” she said.

The woman described Trimmingham as one of her favourite cousins, saying that he was a “very nice person” and that everyone loved him.

“I miss him so much. I just can’t get over it (death),” she said.

Residents of Chester Cottage, where Trimmingham had been residing shortly before going to work in Canouan, remember him as a good person.

They recalled the work that he did in helping residents in the reconstruction of their homes during the recovery period after the passage of Hurricane Tomas last year.

Marsha Medica, Georgetown resident and friend of Trimmingham, shared similar sentiments, saying that he was a good person and did a lot for her and her young daughter.

She told SEARCHLIGHT that she had known Trimmingham some three and a half years.

Medica added that it was customary for Trimmingham to call and check up on her.

“He called last week but said that he would call me back – that was the last time I heard from him,” she said.

Medica said that she was trying to cope with the news of the loss of her friend.

“I really can’t catch myself up to the time,” she told SEARCHLIGHT, adding that he will surely be missed by all.

A release from CCA said that as a mark of respect for Trimmingham, who was “very well liked and respected by all”, all construction works have been temporary suspended.

“We at C.C.A. Limited would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy, thoughts and prayers to Mr. Trimmingham’s family and friends at this time of loss,” the release said. (DD)
