SVG Medical Association College Fair 2011 ends successfully

Jemoniqua Walters may have found a prospective university to further her studies, after attending the 2011 SVG Medical Association College Fair.{{more}}

Walters, a student of the George Stephens Sr. Secondary School, was just one of the many students who attended the college fair which took place on October 12 and 13, at the Methodist Church Hall.

Walters told SEARCHLIGHT that the event was interesting, and that she has found a college where she would like to pursue a major in Business.

The exhibition featured local colleges and businesses, as well as a few regional institutions from Jamaica, Trinidad, Grenada and local institutions such as the Division of Nursing, the Coastguard, VINLEC and National Centre of Technological Innovation, among others.

Speaking to a few of the colleges on exhibition, they commented that the general feedback from students has been exceptional, as the students were enthused, and interested in the studies offered by the institutions.

Assistant Dean of Enrollment planning at the St. George’s University Collin Dowe told SEARCHLIGHT that his engagement with students at the exhibition was mainly to inform them of the appropriate subjects that the school provides, which will assist them in furthering their careers. Dowe stated that he also had an opportunity to advise students in possible career paths, based on their current strengths and likes.

Tamara Job Sprott, Communications Officer at VINLEC stated that students were informed of the job fields available at VINLEC. Sprott related that many persons only think of the technical aspect of the company, but that there are other administrative jobs available. She added that students were also exposed to the functioning of VINLEC power plants, using a cardboard model.

Also relating the many jobs available in Sports was Stephanie Johnson, the Capacity Support officer at the National Sports Committee. Johnson stated that opportunities for careers in sports are many, as persons can operate in media, as sports writers, as coaches, and in law.

Students were also informed of the courses offered by the SVG National Centre for Technological Innovation, which according to tutor Marlo Browne allows them to be recognized as competent, not only in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, but throughout the world.(OS)
